Using a Photo Reference

The thing about using a photo reference is not to trace an image, it’s to have something to refer to while working on the artwork.

Today, during my afternoon break, I did this art card of a wave.

This drawing was inspired by a photo I had found of a wave. I had been wondering for a long time how to capture the coloration of the wave.

Here’s the photo:

Drawing water is always a challenge. But I’m happy the way it worked out.

About Sarah

Now residing in Las Vegas, I was born in Michigan and moved to Texas when 16. After getting my Masters degree in English, I moved to Hollywood, because of the high demand for Medievalists (NOT!). As a freelance writer and editor, I found Nevada offers better conditions for the wallet. I love writing all sorts of things, and occasionally also create some artwork.
