Waters and Sunsets

So I finally finished the first batch of art cards for my client, and sent them off in the mail. It will be interesting to see how they go over.

The last picture in the group was of a sunset over water.

Attempting sunsets and water in this manner is very challenging. First, the image is small – the outside edges of the cards are 5 1/4″ by 4″, so that’s a small space for the art. Sunsets are delicate things in any medium. Here, I’m limited with the color saturation of the pens I use – there’s not a means to make the colors more pastel – so it is all in the color selection and the spacing of the dots in the stippling.

Water too is a tricky thing to draw, especially with color stippling. And in this case, there is also the color effects from the sunset on the water as well.

I’m pretty pleased with the way this turned out. However, it wasn’t until I posted this that I realized the angle of the woman’s shadow is wrong. It works in the composition of the picture, but the physics of the light are off. Ah well.

About Sarah

Now residing in Las Vegas, I was born in Michigan and moved to Texas when 16. After getting my Masters degree in English, I moved to Hollywood, because of the high demand for Medievalists (NOT!). As a freelance writer and editor, I found Nevada offers better conditions for the wallet. I love writing all sorts of things, and occasionally also create some artwork.
